Praying for the Holy Spirit
.

January 5 & 6

Jesus said it was “expedient” for Him to go away. Why? So that we could be granted the full presence of the Comforter, the Spirit of truth, which He knows is absolutely necessary for our faithfulness to Him. The presence of God’s Spirit in our lives is so essential that Jesus Himself as the Son of Man was given this gift at the very onset of His ministry as our Savior. Luke’s account puts it like this, “that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. And the Holy Spirit descended … like a dove upon Him.” And the very next thing Jesus did was to continue in prayer for forty days and forty nights asking God to strengthen Him for the work He was to accomplish on our behalf!

John tells us that Jesus prayed to the Father that we might be given this same gift of the Spirit. It is through the Holy Spirit that we have Christ’s presence in our lives. It is through the Spirit that we are transformed back into the image of God. And it is through prayer that the marvelous gift of the Holy Spirit, our Comforter, our Helper, the Spirit of truth will be granted. Let us all begin to pray “more fervently” than ever before for the one gift that God so desires to bestow upon us.

Have a great day! Thank you for spending some time considering these thoughts.

Luke 11:13  If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”
